C5 Corrosion Rating & Salt Spray: How to Choose Cabinet Air Conditioners for Coastal/Chemical Sites

Coastal ports, chemical parks, offshore wind and offshore energy storage are full of salt spray and corrosive gases. A standard cabinet air conditioner in such an environment sees its shell, condenser and fasteners rust through in just a year or two, causing cooling failure and shock risk. This article explains cabinet air conditioner corrosion protection in salt-spray environments and gives selection tips for coastal/chemical sites.

1. How salt spray destroys cabinet AC

2. ISO 12944 C5 corrosion rating

The international benchmark is ISO 12944, rating C1~C5 (M for marine). C5 fits high-humidity, high-salt industrial/coastal sites and is the baseline for coastal cabinet AC; offshore/splash zones need C5-M or higher.

4. Selection tips (salt-spray)

For energy-storage cabinet AC, prefab cabin AC, energy-storage cabin AC and box-substation AC in coastal/chemical sites, corrosion protection is the foundation of lifetime and reliability.

5. HCK approach

HCK salt-spray cabinet AC uses sandblast pre-treatment + epoxy zinc-rich/polyurethane double coating (≥120µm), blue-film condenser foil, all stainless fasteners, reaching C5, IP55, with -40~55°C wide temp and RS485 monitoring — for coastal PV, chemical cabinets and offshore storage. Frequently Asked Questions

How does a cabinet air conditioner work?

A cabinet air conditioner uses a vapor-compression dual-loop design: an internal fan circulates cabinet air across the evaporator and returns cooled air into the enclosure, forming a closed temperature-control loop; a second loop rejects the absorbed heat to the outside through the condenser. Cabinet air and ambient air never mix, so the enclosure keeps its IP55 rating against dust, oil mist and humidity, while the internal temperature is held at the setpoint.

How do I size a cabinet air conditioner? What is the formula?

Total cooling capacity Qtotal = Qinternal (heat from equipment) + Qsolar (solar radiation gain) + Qconduction (heat through cabinet walls) + Qconvection. As an engineering rule, add a 20% safety margin on top of the calculated value to cover heat waves and future expansion. For example, if equipment dissipates 2400 W and solar plus conduction add about 600 W, Qtotal is roughly 3000 W and a 3500 W unit is the safer choice.

What is the difference between a cabinet air conditioner, a fan and a heat exchanger?

A fan or filter fan only moves air between the cabinet and its surroundings — it does not cool, and it is ineffective when ambient temperatures are high. A heat exchanger transfers heat passively across the temperature difference, so its capacity collapses when that difference is small. A cabinet air conditioner cools actively by compression, holding the cabinet at the setpoint, which suits high-power cabinets, hot workshops and outdoor installations.
