Common Cabinet AC Selection Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

A sizing mistake costs more than a price mistake: an undersized unit keeps the enclosure hot all summer and component failure rates climb. HCK sees the same four mistakes in project reviews — worth checking before purchase.

Mistake 1: reading nameplate capacity only

Nameplate ratings assume standard conditions. When site ambient runs above the standard point, usable capacity drops and selection must be corrected for real duty.

Mistake 2: sizing heat from device nameplates

Actual heat depends on load factor and efficiency; drive and power-supply losses are usually underestimated. Sum measured data or manufacturer loss figures instead.

Mistake 3: comparing purchase price only

Energy, filter replacement, downtime and support response all belong in total cost. Cheap units often give the savings back in peak-season repairs.

Mistake 4: leaving no installation or service space

Blocked inlet/outlet openings and filters that cannot be pulled cut real performance. Check clearances against the drawing before installing.

FAQ

What is wrong with oversizing?

Frequent cycling, humidity swings and higher energy use. Matching the duty beats simply going bigger.

How to estimate heat without loss data?

Use 3–8% of rated power for efficiency losses, add 20% margin, then an ambient correction for hot sites.

What matters in a retrofit?

Confirm cutout size, power capacity and service space first; non-standard cutouts can go through customization.
